Environmental Internship Opportunity

Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is the environmental agency for the state. With approximately 3,000 employees in 16 regional offices, TCEQ strives to protect our state’s natural and human resources consistent with sustainable and economic development. Our goal is clean air, clean water, and safe management of waste. To achieve our mission, TCEQ is an active supporter of a well-qualified and diverse workforce. To that end, our internship programs enable us to recruit talented students interested in protecting the environment.

TCEQ is currently seeking students enrolled in environmental and/or science related disciplines to participate in our 2012 Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP). Undergraduate and graduate students majoring in biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, public health, and public administration are strongly encouraged to apply. MLEIP is a paid full-time summer internship experience that provides participants an opportunity for hands-on learning and professional development in our air, water, and waste programs. While most MLEIP interns are assigned to the TCEQ for this twelve week internship, others are assigned to state agencies or private sector employers who sponsor the program. Ultimately, specific internship assignments are made in consideration of the student’s knowledge, skills, and abilities, and in accordance with the qualifications requested by the manager or supervisor.

For more information about the 2012 Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP) including eligibility requirements, application package guidelines, and deadlines, please visit our website at http://www.tceq.texas.gov/adminservices/employ/mickeyleland/index.html

An online MLEIP application may be completed and submitted by February 28, 2011 (priority deadline) at-

http://www4.tceq.state.tx.us/mleland/

We look forward to a successful 2012 Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP) and the opportunity to work with a talented group of students.

Lab Times

My partners and I split up some of the protocol because we have differing schedules so I was in the lab this week for 4 hours. Should I come in for 2 more hours and if so, what am I supposed to do because they finished the protocol while I was gone.

Thanks,
Jeffrey Chang

Notebooks to be Graded

Posted by Alec Rezigh

Hello everyone. I would just like to inform you that I will be collecting the notebooks this week to be graded. This initial grade will be very important to help you develop your "lab notebook" skills and better understand what we are looking for. I will leave comments to help you and feel free to ask any of the mentors, Gwen, or Shawn if you are ever uncertain.

As I work on Saturdays, I ask that all students either leave their notebooks in lab or bring them to me on Saturday by 4 p.m. Your work up to this weeks lab (not including it) will be evaluated. Thanks for your help and comment on this post if you have any questions.

No Pencil In Lab Notebook

I know that some students told me that they wrote all or part of the first lab in pencil. I told them to make sure and write in pen for all future labs and that I didn't think that they had to go back and copy over the pen in ink. I checked with the other mentors, and we do want you to go back and correct your notebooks. I know that it is tedious but these are technically legal documents recording you research. If you dont want to write over it in pen you can also scan it and paste it in you lab notebook.

Sorry about the confusion,
Michael

Potential Aptamer Target List

This is a list of potential aptamer targets. I'll regularly post targets here as I come across them in the literature or whatnot.

(1) CCL28 from MyBioSource - CCL28 is mucosae-associated epithelial chemokine (MEC). It regulates chemotaxis.

Questions for Assignment 2 post lab.

Posted by Leta Ko

On question 2, is the blank for the pH suppose to be the pH of what it was initially ( when you first put it in the pH electrode?) or what the pH you got at the end? and the ml of dih2O, it wasn't a set amount, because we had to dissolve it then add in naoh or hcl to put it to the right pH then add dih2o til 100 ml. so I wouldn't know how much deionized water I put in?

Thank you!

Website Problem?

Posted by: Yuefeng (Rose) Wu

Hello!
I am having trouble accessing the site where we have to post up our resume. I type in "friend.cns.utexas.edu/nsc" (the website provided in the protocol packet) and the site never loads and just says that the server is taking too long to respond. Do I have the wrong url?

Thanks!

Stephanie Bickford-
So I signed into the link and recovered my safety training history but I dont see a special print thing and when I try to print the screen using the toolbar at the top and I dont have the option to print it as a PDF and I have downloaded Adobe.

Safety Training is Due

Happy (Melted) Snow Day!

The last of your safety training classes is due. Please email Ashley your safety training history. Here's how:

1. Go to this site, https://utdirect.utexas.edu/txclass/index.WBX
2. Log in.
3. Click "Training History" (left side of screen)
4. Make sure you have Adobe Reader on your computer or go to http://get.adobe.com/reader/ to download it for free.

6. Email the saved PDF file to Ashley.

Also - the lab will be open tomorrow.

Happy Friday!

Publication Opportunity( Undergraduate Research Journal)

CALL FOR PAPERS: The Undergraduate Research Journal
Have you written a great paper? Think someone else would like to read
it? Or reference it?

WHO: The Undergraduate Research Journal (URJ) is a student-edited,
multi-disciplinary journal of undergraduate research at The University
of Texas at Austin. The journal is published once per long semester
and is primarily circulated within the University. Impact can reach
farther than UT's campus, however. A copy of the 2010 URJ was recently
requested by and sent to Purdue University?s library.

WHAT: The URJ is looking for interesting, well-written research papers
that present original ideas. Published papers give insight from
original research or synthesize sources in a new and unique way. The
URJ is interested in submissions from all UT?s disciplines.

Submissions may be products of coursework, independent study,
supervised research, senior theses, etc. Past [within one year of
graduation] or current full or part-time undergraduate students in
good standing at the University of Texas at Austin are invited to
submit their articles to the URJ for review.

For more information about submitting, visit: http://texasurj.com/submission

The submission deadline for the 2010-2011 school year is
Friday, February 25th, 2011 at 12PM. The selection process will be
completed in March of 2011. There is a $250+ award for the best paper
by an upper division student and a $100+ award for the best paper by a
lower division student.

Copies of the 2010 journals are in circulation! If you would like one
or have any questions, please contact Monica Ghosh, editor-in-chief,
at texasurj@gmail.com

Snow Day?

Are you wishing for snow?

If the weather turns bad, then check this site (http://www.utexas.edu/emergency/index.php) for the status of the University and to see if classes have been canceled. If lecture is canceled, then I'll post the slides on Blackboard (like usual) & we'll stick to the schedule in the syllabus.

Happy Snowmanning/snowballing/iglooing!
