Grad school anyone?

Those of us who have been researching for a while know the amount of frustration that comes with it. Here is a little video of some other scientists who share our pain.

Ecology Research Opportunity

I'm an EEB graduate student working on thermal adaptation in the
Glanville Frititllary butterfly. Broadly, I'm investigating how this
and other similar species may respond to climate change. The work
involves multiple aspects of ecology, evolution and behaviour. I'm
looking for an undergrad assistant who would be interested in helping
out this semester, and possibly beyond (summer and fall). The position
is unpaid, but there is the option of registering for research hours.
The time commitment will vary over the course of the semester. In some
weeks there will be no work at all, while in others there may be as
much as 10-15 hours of work.

The best way to contact me is via email at nkadvani@hotmail.com

Blackboard and Safety Training Questions

Posted by Tianlu Ma

Hello everyone! I'm so excited to be in the Aptamer stream and am really looking forward to a great semester.

Right now, I have two questions.

  1. How do you upload documents onto Blackboard? When I log in and go to the 51705 course page, there is no link that will allow me to upload anything except through emailing.
  2. This isn't really a question, more of a confirmation. I tried to take the CW 512 safety training course and I think the link listed on the syllabus is incorrect.

Thanks for all the help =)

Signing out procedures

Posted by Mimi Le

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to reiterate the importance of signing in/out. It's super important that you log in your hours so that we can keep track of your progress. If you perform an experiment and spend 3+ hours in lab but you don't get signed out, it's as if you were never there.

Also, you MUST stick around to get a mentor/TA/RE's signature. It's hard to verify that you did what you were supposed to be doing in lab if you put down your hours without someone there to sign off on it.

Don't be afraid to come up to us with the sign out sheet and ask us to sign. It's a lot easier for me to keep track of your hours each week.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns! That's why we're here :)

First Undergraduate Planetary Science Research Conference

Most of us in the Aptamer stream are probably biology majors and
do not think about planetary science. Here is an opportunity to explore
a different field.

The First Undergraduate Planetary Science Research Conference will be
held on Sunday, March 6, 2011 from 9:00 am to 5:00pm, in association
with the 2011 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC), The
Woodlands, TX.

The Conference includes:

Panels on “How to Choose the Grad School Right for You,” “Alternative
Careers in Science,” and “Women in Planetary Science;”
Poster sessions where students will present their posters to other
students and to the scientific community;
“Meeting Mentors” will pair students with a scientist for part of the
LPSC meeting, so students can learn how to engage at a scientific
conference;
Opportunity to meet other undergraduate researchers, graduate
students, and scientists.

Undergraduate students currently conducting research in planetary
sciences, astrobiology, and lunar sciences are eligible.

To apply, please go to:
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/yssurc2011/
Applications are due: Close of Business, February, 1, 2011

Some travel support will be available to students who qualify.
Priority will be given to students of diverse backgrounds. Students
are encouraged to attend LPSC and the travel support includes
registration for and participation in LPSC.

For additional information, please contact Dr. Emily CoBabe-Ammann at
ecobabe@spaceeducation.org.

The YSS Undergraduate Planetary Science Research Conference is
supported by the NASA Science Mission Directorate, the NASA Lunar
Science Institute, and the NASA Astrobiology Program.

Welcome Spring 2011 Students to the FRI Aptamer Blog

Posted by Gwen Stovall

Welcome to the Spring 2011 FRI Aptamer Blog. If you are currently enrolled in the class, then you should've received an invitation to write on the blog. Please email me (see syllabus for email address), if you haven't received an invitation.

Please check this site regularly, as we'll regularly post to the site.

Also - please include you name in the posting. This will make it much easier to search for posts by a particular person. For instance, I begin all of my postings with "Posted by Gwen Stovall." Please do the same.

Thank you,
Gwen
